Biblical Traits of a Father

  1. Your instruction is not to be despised, but to be regarded - Prov. 15:5 A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
  2. To be a glad father, you must discipline your children - Prov. 15:20 A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
  3. You must provide the instruction - Prov. 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
  4. Don't let the tears of your kids stop you from discipline - Prov. 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.
  5. You will be your kids' glory - "That's my dad!" - Prov. 17:6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
  6. Provoke not your kids to wrath by improper discipline - Eph. 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
  7. Teach your kids what you have learned from the Lord - Ex. 10:2 And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son, and of thy son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that ye may know how that I am the LORD.
  8. Don't give your kids to the people of the land - Neh. 10:28-30 And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding; They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes; And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our sons:
  9. Show them you have learned wisdom and understanding - Job 12:12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.
  10. They need a good balanced pattern to follow as a father - Psalm 89:30-34 If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
  11. Destroy those "nations" against your family - Psalm 106:34, 37, 42 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.
  12. Prepare your kids for war and an understanding of the times - 1 Chron. 12:32, 38 And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment. All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.
