The Sin That No One Wants To Admit

Ex. 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

We look at the other nine commandments this summer. WE are going to look at the Tenth one today. What were the other commandments?

Commandment # 1... "No God's Before Me..."
Commandment # 2... "Thou Shalt Make No Graven Image.."
Commandment # 3... "Thou Shalt Not Take The Name of the Lord Thy God in Vain..."
Commandment # 4... "Remember the Sabbath Day...."
Commandment # 5... "Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother:... "
Commandment # 6... "Thou Shalt Not Kill." ...
Commandment # 7... "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery..."
Commandment # 8... "Thou Shalt Not Steal..."
Commandment # 9... "Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness..."

The first four related to the Lord. If this relationship is not right, then the next six will never be right. The problem is that we are rarely always right with the Lord so no wonder we are messed up when it come to the other commandments.

I have said this several times but it needs to be repeated again. The Ten Commandments are not to save you but show you how far you are from God in your life.

With commandments number six through nine, you will find laws that cover them. But you will not find any laws covering number ten that is simply “Thou shalt not covet”.

"I want...I want...I want..." has been the theme song for millions today. Few are satisfied with what they have. They always want more. Selfish people have simply imbibed the spirit of a materialistic age. That is why covetousness plays such a large part in their drives and deeds. We will be looking at right wants and wrong wants. It is our desire that we will take a serious checkup on our inner longings for things in the light of the Bible's teaching on this subject.

The basis of covetousness seems to lie at the root of many sins such as stealing, adultery, self-centeredness, even murder just to name a few.

I want to give you a few thoughts on this sin that people rarely admit to having in their life. What will they not admit to having it? Number six through nine is sins that some one can see but this one is kept inside and the only person that really sees it is the Lord.

The Tenth Commandment reaches into three areas of our lives, property, persons and possessions.

You would not steal your neighbor's house, but you wish it were yours.
You would not run off with your neighbor's wife, but you wish she were yours.
You would not rob your neighbor of his money, or car, but you wish those things were yours.

Covetousness is the excessive inward desire for the material things of this world. It has been called, "an itch for more…" A covetous person has a severe craving for the possessions or life circumstances of others. It's not just a casual "wouldn't it be nice if..." It is a strong; "I want what you have, because I feel that is what will satisfy me and make me happy."

Once you start coveting something that some one else has, you will not stop. It will get into the fiber on your mind. One of the riches men in the world was asked how much money makes a man happy. His answer shows a coveting heart. He said “just one dollar more.” This is shows why this is a sin that people rarely admit to having.

Here are some thoughts regarding the misery of coveting;

First, God knows that what we covet will not last. Clothes wear out. Cars wear out. X Box game systems wear out. But we usually will be bored with it before it wears out. 2 Cor. 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Secondly, God knows that what we covet will be a burden to us somewhere down the line. David coveted his neighbor’s wife and after this, he had nothing but pain and agony in his life. The sin of coveting added a host of other sins to his life. David would never dreamed that night he would covet his neighbor’s wife or that he would commit adultery with her or have husband killed. One of the saddest psalms that he wrote was Psalm 51. He admits his before God but he had to live with the consequences of his actions of that night for the rest of his life.

Thirdly, God knows that coveting is deceptive. Let’s think on the words of our Lord Jesus on this subject. Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Having all the toys will not make you happy. Having the best toys will make you happy. It is simply because they will not last. There will be a faster toys or a brighter one come along in a little while.

The mastery over coveting is simple. Be content with what you have and where you are.

Php. 4:11-13 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Heb. 13:5-6 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

1 Tim. 6:6-8 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

I have been preaching a long time. One of the things that I have learned is this: I have never seen a U-Haul trailer behind a hearse yet.

Conclusion: When all you live for is the toys and how much you can get, you will be a miserable person. But the opposite of coveting is contentment. The opposite of getting is giving. Are you a getter or a giver? The choice is yours.

Sattvicwarrior,

It's very apparant that you have never read the Bible from cover to cover... again, just as the comment you posted about so-called contratictions, you are ignoring context and the progressive revelation of His word through the varied dispensations of mankind.

Christians today are living in the church age, walking as commanded by the church epistles primarily written by Paul through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

By the way, you need to keep in mind that just because someone claims to be a "Christian," that in no way means that they are a true Christian which believes and follows the commands of God's Word. As we have discussed before, man has many kinds of religion today, but in truth, there are very few true Bible believers... the world is very illiterate regarding the Bible.

Most of the world today is ignorant of the teachings of God's Word, and you continue to point out various examples of these false teachings. I challenge you to actually read the Bible for yourself....

By the way, you forgot to comment on the main focus of the article.... coveting!!!!!

I would love to discuss some of these things in detail if you so desire, just as I asked before... that is, if you are sincere in finding the truth.

Dear Jim..
you say.
"IF YOU ARE SINCERE IN FINDING THE TRUTH."
c’mon . thats a bit arrogant on your part dont ya think??
there many rivers , but the all lead to the same ocean.
and to assume that i have not read the bible from" cover to cover" is really more of an " assumption " on your part for sure. ..
and assumed knowledge is a very dangerous thing.
PRACTICING " AUSTIERIES" [i.e reading the bible from one end to the other does NOT give KNOWLEDGE to the unenlightened. it just adds to ones EGO and has NOTHING to do with Christ consciousness or any identity with GOD. ..
so if you are SINCERE in finding the TRUTH a book wont be your answer no matter HOW or Who says it is. .
IT can only be done through your OWN personal experience searching out the nature of God within you . [ that's why ya have a BRAIN dude. ]. You had that LONG before you had any outside influence. . and of COURSE I am using contradictions. [ as some examples]. the purpose is simply to point out NOTHING is absolute, so to consider contradictions as the absolute word of god it would possibly make the wise man to take time to find EXACTLY the origin of said statements ..
Every biblical scholar that I have come across has attested that this is true.
if ALL you have is a “ book” [ outside influence because someone said so ] . you have NOTHING.. no matter HOW much you read it
Once you EXPERIENCE god. [ within you ] you have EVERYTHING..

Sattvicwarrior,

I apologize if I sounded arrogant to you, but the statements you made on this post plus the long list of so-called contridictions from another post a while back are clearly not associated with the actions and teachings of a true Bible believer, of which I try my best to be in my daily walk with the Lord. If you believe I behave and stand behind the things you have listed (a rather lengthly list too), then that is why I have accused you of not reading the complete Word of God in context, and understanding the progressive revelation He has given to His people during the periods it represents. You are misrepresenting the clear teachings of Scripture with your statements, thus, you are misrepresenting God and painting a false impression of Him through your speech.

Thus, for those who misrepresent the teachings of Scripture, they fall into the following categories; false teachers with their man-made religion, unbelievers who do not understand the Word of God, or baby believers who have had no spiritual growth due to not reading their Bible. Since you continue to misrepresent God by pointing out the false teachings of others, or possibly your own belief system in God, I have ASSUMED your overall knowledge of the full counsel of God in His Word is limited... for instance, parents of today are to raise their children teaching them about God and His Word, especially godly morality and love for his fellow man; in the age we live today, the parents have no command to kill their rebellious children, although God did allow the nation of Israel, God's chosen nation, to do that during that specific time frame. By your statement, however, you are insinuating the God still believes that parents can do this today.... on the contrary, parents today kill their children before they ever get out of the womb because of their own SELFISH reasons.

You made the statement that God kills everything at a whim.... hmmmm.... again, you are misrepresenting God, who sent His only begotten Son unto the Earth, because He loves us so much, to take the SIN penalty of the entire mankind upon Himself, so that we would not be judged for our sin. Sin is what destroys, and man has a choice in his action and behavior... men are the ones who kill, and steal, and suppress other men, and create war, and are full of greed.... all because of their hatred of God and their love of sin.

I have been truthful with you throughout our conversation about the lack of Biblical knowledge for many in the world, especially those "christians" who hold to their man-made religion which you so brilliantly mention in the majority of your statements. However, that is not true Biblical Christianity, of which I have tried to show in my posts plus through my daily walk with my Lord.

The Bible is God's Book to mankind... it is His words. You are false if you only think it is a book created by men. How are we to know about God if He did not leave us any instructions???

I'm sorry to hear that you believe just any ole river will do.... I don't think you found that LOGIC in the Word of God; but of course, if that is true, which everyone would like to believe, then they can live their lives just anyhow they please and not have to worry about God and a future judgement. No responsibility; no accountability; no punishment for wrong actions, since right and wrong is defined by each one as they FEEL in their heart!!!

I am sorry to hear about all your bad experiences with the "little c" Christians.... like I have said before, just because one claims to be a Christian, that doesn't mean that they are.... since you have read the Bible, surely you remember the verses which follow;

Matt. 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Matt. 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Hmmmmmmm.... sounds pretty clear to me that the many have been deceived by their man-made religion or their aspiration in following man's logic and wisdom instead of some book called the Bible that claims to be written by God.

Sorry to be so lengthy, but I felt in this case, more words were necessary.... much easier to go back in forth via email, but blog comments will suffice for now...

Thanks again for taking the time to come back to my blog and make comments and discuss some things....
