Mercy and Truth

Psalms 57:10 For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

The words "mercy" and "truth" are connected numerous times in the Old Testament of the Bible, especially in the book of Psalms. These references are sources of spiritual refreshment to the Christian believer:
  1. God's mercy and truth are extended to those who are in obedience to His Word - Psalms 25:10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
  2. God's mercy and truth are directed toward those in distress - Psalms 57:3 He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.
  3. God's mercy and truth are more than ample to meet any spiritual need - Psalms 86:15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. Psalms 117:2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
  4. God's mercy and truth are met together in Christ - Psalms 85:10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. The truth is, man in his unrighteous state could never find peace with God on his own. It was therefore necessary for Christ "to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Cor. 5:21) Receiving, by faith, Christ's righteousness, through His sacrificial death on the cross, will result in mercy and peace being extended to the one who believes.
  5. Believer's should give praise and glory for God's mercy and truth - Psalms 115:1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth's sake. Psalms 100:5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
